According to rumors, the company’s own C1 modem will make its debut with the next iPhone 17 Air. Last month, the Cupertino-based tech titan unveiled the iPhone 16e and its first proprietary cellular modem, the C1.

The move identifies a significant shift in Apple’s strategy to reduce its reliance on external suppliers, namely Qualcomm, for crucial components that allow wireless connectivity in its products. Apple’s first-generation baseband processor, the C1, was created to manage mobile network communications for the iPhone. In contrast to processors or GPUs, baseband modems can achieve significant improvements without implementing a sophisticated manufacturing process. The C1 really blends a number of process technologies. 

For example, its low-frequency and intermediate frequency transceivers (TRx) use 7nm technology, while its core baseband logic is based on 4/5nm nodes. A more developed 55nm node is the foundation of the power management integrated circuit (PMIC).  

By taking a balanced approach, Apple can maximize both cost and performance without pursuing cutting-edge semiconductor technologies like 3nm, which offer few advantages for modems. There are limited returns because the baseband isn’t the largest power drain on a smartphone’s wireless system, even though modern manufacturing nodes can increase power efficiency.

Getting More Out of Your iPhone 17 Air’s New Speed

The current C1 modem is intended to provide consistent transmission speeds and network performance on existing 4G and sub-6GHz 5G networks. A new version of the C1, which will enter commercial production the following year, is also being developed by Apple. 

Together with support for mmWave 5G, a high-frequency, ultra-fast wireless standard that has been sluggish to spread over the world, this new modem promises faster transfer rates and better power efficiency.

Though adding mmWave capability is not technically challenging, Apple’s difficulty is to achieve consistent performance without dramatically reducing battery life, an area in which the redesigned C1 is expected to make considerable improvements. Interestingly, the mmWave transceivers and front-end components are likely to employ a 28nm technology, demonstrating that newer is not always better with this type of gear.
