Google AI CEO’s Latest Advice: Sir Demis Hassabis, Google DeepMind CEO, advised students to emphasize STEM subjects and select AI tools for future job market accomplishments. Demis Hassabis, Google DeepMind CEO and Nobel Laureate, said he would still prefer STEM subjects if he were a student today. Although AI is transforming rapidly, he mentioned that understanding scientific and mathematical first principles will remain essential for students. He said this on Monday at a conference at SXSW London.

The STEM acronym represents science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It is the foundation for innovative technology, and covers a wide range of disciplines to resolve world-level problems using advanced methods.
AI is reshaping industrial operations, but he mentioned, “It is still important to understand fundamentals” of computer science, mathematics, and physics to know “how these systems are put together”. He also stated that present-day students must gain AI tools to stay ahead in the upcoming competitive work environment.
Hassabis predicted that AI will initiate “new very valuable jobs” throughout the coming 5-year to 10-year span. He said it may particularly benefit “technically savvy people who are at the forefront of using these technologies”. In his London speech, Demis also compared AI’s effect and contribution to the Industrial Revolution. He spoke optimistically about human adaptability, despite the extensive job displacement concerns.
