What You Should Know About CID’s New Biometric System

Category: Latest News

On Wednesday at the Pashan headquarters of Pune, the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) presented an AI-based data measurement system. For the experimental project, the Pune Rural Police were picked.

Sunil Ramanand, additional director general of police (CID), stated:

The centre has been equipped with all the hardware and software required to take biometric data of criminals, both accused and convicted persons.”

The centre decided to take pictures of the arrested people from 12 separate angles, including iris scans, fingerprints, and numerous other features. He mentioned:

It will collect samples for DNA fingerprints depending on the nature of Crime.

This collected data will be stored on NIC’s cloud server to make it available across India on the Crime and Criminal Tracking system. If anyone gets arrested, their entire information will be recorded for better data management and accessibility.

This initiative will help the police to enhance suspect tracking in any crime with minimal manual efforts. This can be done by maintaining the Modus Operandi of the suspects in a specific type of crime. Ramanand said:

The AI will automatically match the features of the suspects even if they change their looks or alter their hairstyle or weight. He or she will be identified.”

What is Modus Operandi?

A person’s working patterns, especially when it comes to business or criminal investigations, but also in general, are known as their modus operandi. It’s a Latin expression that roughly translates to “mode of operating.”

In the coming days, this system will be introduced to Pune city and Pimpri-Chinchwad. The uploaded data on the cloud of the arrested or convicted person will remain on the server for the next 75 years.
